“My books are much more exciting than I am, and that’s a good thing. It’s always more fun to make stuff up anyway.”

Sarah Dessen was born on June 6th, 1970 in Evanston, Illinois, but she spent most of her life in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She has always had a love of reading and writing. When she was eight, her parents gave her an old manual typewriter and a desk so she could start writing down her stories, and it became a passion. Both of her parents were professors at the University of North Carolina, where she later graduated with a degree in English and high honors in creative writing. After college, Dessen decided to continue with her job as a waitress at the Flying Burrito restaurant while working on her first novel, That Summer. The book was released three years after she graduated college. Since then, Dessen has written 8 novels. She is now teaching and living in North Carolina with her husband and daughter Sasha, as well as two dogs. She says of her job,
“Teaching is great for me, because I get to show people how writing can really change the way you see not only yourself but the world.”

Dessen’s other novels are:
That Summer
Someone Like You
Keeping the Moon
Dreamland
This Lullaby
The Truth About Forever
Lock and Key

“When I found an author who seemed to say just what I was feeling, it really struck me and resonated. I hope that my books do that for the people who read them: I think it’s the best thing to which any writer can aspire.”
